Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Tax Scams In Leelanau County

By Craig Manning | April 12, 2024

With Tax Day just days away, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office is warning county residents to be on the lookout for tax scams.

Yesterday, the sheriff’s office shared on Facebook that its personnel, along with other Leelanau County offices, have been made aware of “scam letters being received by residents.” The fraudulent letters inform residents that they are “delinquent on taxes owed to the county or the state and that failure to take immediate action could result in consequences.”

“These letters are bogus in nature and designed to take advantage of unsuspecting citizens,” the sheriff’s office stated. “If letters of this nature are ever received, some simple steps can be taken to either verify or invalidate the letters as legitimate or a scam. Contact with the local county offices listed within the letter is probably the quickest and simplest way. Do not call the numbers listed on the letters as they will put you in contact with the perpetrators. The same can be said for any electronic communication methods such as links or emails.”

Several examples of the scam letters received by Leelanau residents can be viewed here, as part of the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
