Domestic Shooting Takes Place in Leelanau Township

A “domestic-related shooting” took place in Leelanau Township on Tuesday, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office reported on its Facebook page this morning.

According to the post, Sheriff’s Office units “were dispatched to North Purkiss Road in Leelanau Township” at 2:25pm on Tuesday, October 6, in response to “multiple 911 calls that someone had been shot.”

Deputes “quickly determined that a shooting did in fact take place and involved a father and son,” the Sheriff’s Office reported. “A verbal argument between the parties turned physical and a firearm was eventually brought into the situation. The father, a 77-year-old from Northport, was subsequently arrested and lodged at the Leelanau County jail on felony charges. The victim, a 48-year-old male, also from Northport, was transported to Munson Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”

The Sheriff’s Office has forwarded a report of the incident to Leelanau County prosecuting attorney’s office for review. Authorities say the incident was “isolated” and carries “no ongoing threat or danger to the public.”
