Mundos Eat House Opens In Former Gold Baby Biscuits Spot

In a whirlwind week — and decision — Dan and Melissa Clark, owners of Mundos Roasting & Co., and their family members have transformed the former Gold Baby Biscuits in Suttons Bay into a new takeout spot called Mundos Eat House.

Renovations and menu development are underway now, following a heartfelt social media post on May 22 from Gold Baby Biscuits owners Alicia Manson and Lyndsey Egli, stating that their biscuit eatery is closing permanently: “It was an incredible, beautiful year, and we loved sharing it with all of you.”

They added, regarding the relationship with neighboring Mundos Coffee, where customers were able to enjoy Gold Baby carryout with a beverage order: “We couldn't be more grateful for their friendship and we loved being their neighbors (and partners in biscuit-coffee crime) for that one beautiful year.”

The Clarks have officially taken over the lease at 206 North St Joseph Street, Suite A, and purchased Gold Baby’s ovens and equipment. Dan Clark explains, “Once they made their decision, they reached out to me, and it just happened very quickly.” He adds that the fact that Mundos operates its locations in Traverse City and Suttons Bay as a family business, “makes it easier to do things like this.”

The Clarks have five kids who all are helping out in the transition in some way. “Ben, who is 12, helped paint this weekend. Sarah, our oldest daughter is married to our baker, who is developing new croissant ‘buns’ for our sandwiches as we speak,” says Dan. “My son Adam and his fiancé Kelly will likely come up here to Suttons Bay to run the food program, allowing us to add a couple of employees in TC.”

He adds, “It’s been a dream of mine for 27 years, something my childhood friend and I dreamed up together. His name is Jeremy, but my dad called him Jeremundo—or Mr. Mundo. He has a different career path, as a counselor in TC, but opening Mundos Eat House is definitely a dream realized.”

Mundos Eat House will serve takeout breakfast and lunch, keeping the same hours as Mundos Coffee in Suttons Bay, with some outdoor seating and the same symbiotic order-here, eat-there relationship that it enjoyed as Gold Baby Biscuits. Dan says the menu will include “comfort food like cheddar waffles plus healthy options, such as avocado bowls and acai bowls and ‘tonics’ such as a sparkling hibiscus tea-lemonade.”

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department comes today (Thursday) for an inspection, meaning a potential soft opening over the weekend. Check the website for official opening day.
