Lake Leelanau Lake Association Launches New Stream Monitoring Program, Seeks Volunteers
The Lake Leelanau Lake Association (LLLA) is seeking volunteer sample collectors to help launch its brand-new stream monitoring program. Volunteers will be tasked with helping collect samples of aquatic insects, “which reveal important information about stream health.”
The LLLA is hosting stream monitoring sessions Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10, from 10am-noon both days. The nonprofit is seeking “sure-footed volunteers” who are willing to “wade into streams with nets and buckets to collect aquatic insects.” Other volunteers are also welcome – and “don’t need to be as sure-footed” – to stay on the stream bank and “sort the collection into jars.”
The October 9 sampling session will take place “at a stream on the northeast corner of North Lake Leelanau,” while the October 10 session will break volunteers into two groups – one at a stream “on the west side of South Lake Leelanau just north of Bel Lago Vineyards,” the other “southwest of South Lake Leelanau a few minutes west of Moomer's Ice Cream.” Exact meeting locations will be shared with volunteers once they have signed up.
More information and a sign-up link can be found on the LLLA website.
