MDOT Kicks Off $1.5 Million M-22 Shoulder Work In Leelanau County

A heads up for Leelanau County motorists: Starting today (Monday), the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be resurfacing nearly nine miles of paved shoulders on M-22, spanning from Lakeview Hills Road in Bingham Township to Cedar Street in Suttons Bay. The $1.5 million project is expected to last for a little over a month, with MDOT estimating Friday, October 3 as the end date for the work. During that time, drivers should expect some “traffic shifts with traffic regulators,” according to an MDOT press release.

Per the press release, this project is part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s ongoing mission to “fix the damn roads” throughout Michigan. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime,” Whitmer said. This particular project, according to MDOT, “is expected to directly and indirectly support 14 jobs.”

MDOT says the shoulder repairs along M-22 “will provide a smooth, safe shoulder surface for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as for drivers of vehicles who need to pull off of the roadway.”
