Pleva’s Meats Has Sold; New Market And Butcher Shop Coming This Winter

David and Theresa Gersenson announced this week that they have purchased the historic Pleva’s Meats in their hometown of Cedar and will open a market this winter. David Gersenson said in a Facebook announcement, “We had the pleasure of being able to close, at the Pleva’s storefront, with owners Ray and Marge Pleva.”

The building was the longtime home to the family-owned and run Pleva’s Meats — famed for its Plevalean cherry burger and cherry sausages — which closed in February 2020. The Pleva’s Meats business was not included in the sale. 

The Gersensons, who also co-own Broomstack Kitchen & Taphouse and Leelanau Curling Club in the old schoolhouse in Maple City, and operate M22 Inn properties in Suttons Bay, Empire and Glen Arbor, and Sylvan Inn of Glen Arbor, say their goal is to open this winter.

Said Gersenson, “This is going to be an exciting venture, getting back to my entrepreneurial roots when I was a 19-year-old organic produce-slinging kid, peddling high quality foods, with focus on local, organic and sustainably raised produce, groceries and meats.”

He says they are working to hire an in-house butcher, and “our plan with Pleva’s will be one that includes serving and building the community.”

The Gersensons say they don’t have name yet for the new market and are taking suggestions.
