Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Announces Prescribed Burns For Spring 2024

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced its spring 2024 plans for prescribed fires in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. NPS does prescribed burns numerous times throughout the year, using the controlled fires “as a tool to assist in restoring forest habitat while also reducing the threat of wildland fires.” Prescribed fires can also help with the management of invasive species.

One prescribed fire will occur in the Good Harbor Bay area of the National Lakeshore, where park staff plan to burn 104 acres. The other two are planned for the Platte Plains area, including a 515-acre Otter Creek unit and a 416-acre Bass Lake unit.

Updates around burning activities, including when those burns are active, will be posted as “alerts” on the National Lakeshore’s official website. A map of the three burn units is available for viewing here.
