Local Businesses Marking Earth Day With Highway Cleanups

By Craig Manning | April 10, 2024

Earth Day is April 22, and two Leelanau businesses are marking the occasion with open-to-the-public cleanup projects.

First, next Tuesday, April 16 at 4pm, Northport’s Hallstedt-Homestead Cherries (HH Cherries) will host a cleanup project as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. HH Cherries, along with volunteers, will be cleaning up 1.8 miles of M-22 through Omena. Those interested in participating are invited to meet at the Omena Museum “rain or shine, except for thunderstorms.” Participants are encouraged to “wear gloves, comfy shoes, and dress warmly,” though garbage bags and safety vests will be provided.

Then, at 3pm on April 22 – Earth Day itself – Leelanau winery Rove Estate will host “Rove & Renew,” which invites volunteers to the winery to help pick up trash on M-72. “Our core values are community, connection, and sustainability, so of course, we are beyond excited for the opportunity to work beside our community to give back to Mother Earth,” Rove proprietor McKenzie Gallagher says of the event.

The cleanup portion of Rove & Renew will last an hour, after which volunteers are encouraged to stick around for a “Wine Down” event, where they’ll enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and snacks.

Check-in for Rove & Renew starts at 3pm, with the cleanup kicking off at 3:30. Those interested in participating can register online.
