National Trails Day Events On The Books At Sleeping Bear Dunes
By Craig Manning | June 4, 2025
Both the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will host trail cleanup events at the park this weekend, in celebration of National Trails Day. Held each day on the first Saturday of June, National Trails Day “encourages people to discover their local trials, become active concerning trail issues, and share their excitement for the outdoors.”
The National Lakeshore itself is inviting trail enthusiasts to the Shauger Hill Trailhead parking lot from 9am to noon on Saturday, to “put the finishing touches on this year’s cleanup of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive’s Lake Michigan Overlook.”
“After a brief safety conversation, volunteers will drive up the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive to the Lake Michigan Overlook and work together with park staff to put finishing touches on this year’s cleanup of Piece Stocking Scenic Drive’s Lake Michigan Overlook (Stop #9),” reads an event description on the National Park Service website. “Work will include opening sandbags, dumping and spreading out the sand, and removing any trash and debris found in the area. The sand is local to the area.”
No registration is required for the cleanup event, but the project “will be limited to the first 40 people to arrive.” Those younger than 18 years old will require adult accompaniment. All volunteers will get free entry for the day to the entire National Lakeshore, in exchange for their service.
During a similar time window, from 8am to noon on Saturday, the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will host their own cleanup event at the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail in Glen Haven. There will be a Friends of Sleeping Bear tent at the Glen Haven trailhead that morning to get volunteers started. Volunteers can then “help the Friends report on the status of every trail within the Park during the event.” An additional info tent will be set up at Good Harbor Beach that morning. Per a press release, all participants who register to help out “will receive the Friends’ 28-page hiking trail guide, fun stickers. and swag from the American Hiking Society (while supplies last).”
