Ten New Sculptures At Walk Of Art

June 8, 2016

Ten new sculptures are featured at the Art Rapids! Walk of Art at Day Park on South Bay Shore Drive in Elk Rapids. “Blue Sculpture with Yellow Ring” by Cadillac’s David Petrakovitz greets visitors at the entrance. East Lansing artist Michael Angelo Magnotta offers “Sailfish,” a steel mobile that shimmers and wiggles in the sun and wind on the park’s East Bay beach. Along the park’s paved pathway is his “Strange Roots,” a marriage of burl wood to a remnant part of a farm implement that might have unearthed it

Among the other sculptures added to the Walk of Art this spring are “Emergence,” by Suttons bay wood-carver Bart Ingraham; “Garden Piece,” by the late Wendel Heers, professor emeritus of art at the University of Michigan, which is mounted on a massive boulder provided and installed by Pine Hill Nursery; a similar sculpture of rock and steel produced as a memorial “For Wendell Heers” by his long-time friend and collaborator, Scott Lankton, of Cedar, Michigan; and “I Love Michigan Cherries,” a stainless-steel design by Traverse City’s Joe Lueck, commemorating the life of local orchardist Gene Veliquette.

With the new installations, Walk of Art now has the maximum 30 works envisioned by the collaborative agreement between Art Rapids! and Antrim County. All the sculptures are chosen by a professional jury and remain from one to three years. Most are for sale.
