Green Bird Organic Cellars, Lakeview Hill Farm Seeking Locals’ Help With Harvests

By Emily Tyra | Sept. 21, 2022

It’s your chance to be a farmer for a day. Two Leelanau farms put out the call for volunteers to help with time-sensitive harvests in the coming days.

Grape crush: Green Bird Organic Cellars’ farmer/owners Tim and Betsy Hearin and their motley crew of volunteers will be harvesting concord grapes from 8am-12pm(ish) on Saturday Sept. 24. “It’s the same day as Leelanau UnCaged so come on up to Northport and make a day of it!” says Betsy Hearin. “Volunteers can expect to cut grape bunches and carry full buckets to the crush pad. Snacks and drinks are provided, and we have plenty of extra harvesting shears.”

Green Bird Organic Cellars grows estate-grown wines, handcrafted hard ciders, pastured eggs and organic veggies on a stunning 15 acres off Engles Road, two miles from Northport. To sign up for the grape harvest, email the Hearins directly at hello@greenbirdcellars.com

Potato heads: Get your hands dirty with the upcoming potato harvest at Lakeview Hill Farms. Farmer/owners John Dindia and Bailey Samp share that “we just need help harvesting for one day for a few hours this Monday, Sept. 26 from 12:30-4pm, weather permitting. Come see how we do things around here and take home some free potatoes. We appreciate the help!”

Lakeview Hill Farm is a certified organic produce farm with a farm store open daily 9am-6pm. The farm is located on Lakeview Hill Road on 58 acres with a gorgeous hill top view of Lake Leelanau. Email lakeviewhillorganics@gmail.com if you’re available for the harvest.
