Three Northern Michigan Inns Named By USA Today Readers As The Top Wine Country Hotels In the Nation

By Emily Tyra | Aug. 30, 2021

Three northern Michigan inns clinched the top three spots in USA Today’s 10Best Wine Country Hotels 2021 awards, including Leelanau County's own Inn at Black Star Farms, which took third. This is the second year in a row that the Inn at Black Star Farms was named in the annual readers’ choice poll (it had the top spot in 2020).

And the Suttons Bay-based, family-owned inn and winemaker is in good company: Fellow Traverse Wine Coast winery, Chateau Chantal Winery and Inn located across the bay on Old Mission Peninsula landed first place for 2021. Hotel Walloon in Walloon Lake near Petoskey placed second.

A panel of wine industry experts partnered with USA Today's 10Best editors to pick the initial 20 nominees and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote.

Other hotels in the competition are from notable wine regions including Texas, California, and Oregon.

USA Today’s top 10 winners in the category Best Wine Country Hotel are as follows:

1 Château Chantal - Traverse City, Michigan

2 Hotel Walloon - Walloon Lake, Michigan

3 Inn at Black Star Farms - Suttons Bay, Michigan
