Boater Goes Missing Near Stoney Point in Suttons Bay Township
By Craig Manning | Sept. 8, 2026
Local law enforcement is searching for a missing boater near Stoney Point, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday.
According to a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office, Leelanau County Dispatch received a report Monday morning (Labor Day) of a dinghy “spinning unattended in the water just off Stoney Point in Suttons Bay Township.”
First units arrived at the scene at approximately 8:51am, including personnel from Suttons Bay Fire and Rescue and the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division.
“The owner of the dinghy was located, and it was determined that Brett Zimmerman, 25, of Lansing, Kansas (pictured, left), was the last known person to have been aboard the vessel,” the Sheriff’s Office post noted. “Video surveillance from marina cameras was reviewed and helped verify that Zimmerman was the individual believed to have been operating the dinghy.”
More than 24 hours later, the search for Zimmerman “remains ongoing.” Search efforts have expanded to include assistance from the United States Coast Guard and the Mutual Aid Dive Team. The latter brought “specialized equipment” to the table, “including side-scan sonar and drones.” The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office also credited several other agencies for assisting in the search, including the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Benzie County Sheriff’s Office, the Grand Traverse Band Police Department, Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, and Leelanau County Dispatch.
Search efforts Monday “focused on the waters surrounding Stoney Point,” but also covered the nearby shoreline. The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office also contacted area homeowners, “to notify them of the incident and request their assistance in reporting any information that may be relevant to the search.” Monday's search was suspended around 9pm.
The sheriff’s office asks that anyone with any information about Zimmerman or his whereabouts, or anyone “who may have observed anything unusual in or around the waters near Stoney Point” on Monday morning, notify law enforcement immediately. The non-emergency number for the sheriff’s office is 231-256-8800.
UPDATE: The sheriff's office has reported that, shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, September 8, “the body of the missing boater was located and recovered.” Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and locals are still asked to report any information about the case to law enforcement.
