Elmwood Gets $400K for Proposed Cherry Bend Trail
Dec. 12, 2025
Elmwood Township is one of many municipalities to receive grants in the latest Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) cycle.
Elmwood will receive $400,000 for its planned Cherry Bend Road trail, which is expected to substantially boost pedestrian and other non-motorized safety along the very busy corridor.
"Just yesterday, I was driving home from the township and there was a lady probably in her 70s or 80s walking along the shoulder of Cherry Bend Road with ski poles right at the sharp curve," Supervisor Jeff Shaw tells the Ticker. "It would have been very easy for someone to lose control. And that's why we're doing this."
The township still has about $600,000 to raise for the trail, which is expected to break ground in 2027. Shaw says the $400,000 secured from the MNRTF was the maxium available for this type of project from that entity. The project already secured a $1.1 million Transporation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant from the state.
