Fig’s Gets New Digs; Cedar River Coffee Co. Coming To Cedar

By Emily Tyra | March 19, 2020

Fig’s Breakfast & Lunch of Lake Leelanau, known for its homemade sausage and farm-to-table breakfasts and burgers, will move up the road to a new location at 104 Main Street, Lake Leelanau. Owners Bryon and Jaimee Figueroa hope to be open in their bigger space (previously Bella Fortuna North) by mid-April.

They temporarily shuttered Fig’s at 202 Main Street and are working now to ready the new space. Bryon says they are using the limbo time during the executive order to close restaurants (other than for delivery or carry-out) as a work bee. “I have very helpful teenage kids and a fleet of family helping get stuff done. Financially this will be tight, but if we get the all-clear to open by mid-April, the next time you dine at Fig’s it will be in the new space.”

The Figueroas will continue to serve breakfast and lunch, and Bryon says the paperwork is started to add a liquor license. The drink menu will be curated with local craft beverages. “We will do what we do, just on a little larger scale. We are not looking to become dinner place. We plan to have about 80 seats, using both the garden and part of the indoor space,” says Bryon. “We don’t want to lose our personal and homey touch. The real desire for me, is to feed more people, and use more local farms, and offer more jobs to go year-round. The hope is to source 95 percent of our menu from Leelanau County.”

Also in the heart of the peninsula, the Gale family of Cedar will open Cedar River Coffee Co. in a portion of the former CHASE bank building at 9104 S. Kasson Street in Cedar. Cindy Gale, along with husband Andy Gale, who is President and General Manager of Bay Area Recycling for Charities, plans to be serving coffee in a 500-square-foot space by the end of May. Jakob Gale, a student at Eastern Michigan University and Jenna Gale, a student at Leland Public School, will also work in the family business.

In addition to serving Roaster Jack Coffee Company coffee and espresso, Cindy plans to source grab-and-go sandwiches and pastries and be open this summer 7 days a week, likely from 7am to 2pm.

Lisa Rossi-Brett and Rick Brett, also of Cedar, are the new owners of the former CHASE building and will seek an office tenant for the other approximately 1,000 square feet. Rossi-Brett, who is co-chair of the Cedar Polka Fest, would like to transform the vestibule formerly used as an ATM into a tourist welcome area and information booth to serve all of the Leelanau Peninsula.
