The search is on for a missing kayaker, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office reported in a social media post Wednesday morning.

According to the post, Leelanau County 911 received an emergency call “at approximately 5pm” on Tuesday, September 22, alerting them to an overturned kayak on West Grand Traverse Bay near Sunrise Beach in Peshawbestown.

“Emergency Services were dispatched and arrived on scene within three minutes,” the post notes. “Witnesses stated that a male victim was last seen about 200 yards offshore. Extensive search operations lasted until approximately 8:45pm when water conditions and visibility became unsafe for emergency responders to continue. Search efforts have resumed today, Wednesday September 23, 2026.”

In addition to Leelanau County 911 and the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office, multiple other agencies have been involved in the emergency response and search process. Those include the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and its emergency response, police, and fire rescue teams, as well as Suttons Bay Fire Rescue, Leelanau Township Fire Rescue, Leland Township Fire and Rescue, the Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Dive Team, and the United States Coast Guard.

At the time of the post, which was published on Facebook at 9:12am on Wednesday morning, the incident remained “under investigation and active with no additional information currently available.”
