The Inn at Black Star Farms Voted Top Wine Country Hotel in America

By Craig Manning | July 31, 2025

Another year, another victory for northern Michigan in the annual USA Today 10Best readers choice poll for top “wine country hotels.”

This week, USA Today announced the top 10 vote-getters in its recent 10Best poll, which sought to find the “perfect place to relax over a glass of wine after a day of touring and tasting in wine regions around the country.” The top two establishments on the list aren’t in California’s wine country, but are right here in northern Michigan.

Topping the list is the Inn at Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay, which USA Today praises for putting guests “in the heart of the Traverse Wine Coast, with easy access to wineries and tasting rooms on the Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsula wine trails.”

The runner-up is also a local winery: Old Mission Peninsula’s Chateau Chantal, which earned kudos for offering “well-appointed accommodations amidst the restaurants, wineries, museums, and historic agriculture” of Old Mission, as well as for suites and rooms with “exceptional views of vineyards or Grand Traverse Bay.”

Northern Michigan is no stranger to success on these types of 10Best polls. Two years in a row, Suttons Bay’s Hop Lot Brewing Company has finished second on the list of the country’s finest beer gardens.

As for wine country inns, Black Star Farms and Chateau Chantal have built something of a dynasty in this particular 10Best category, trading honors back and forth from year to year. In 2024, Chateau Chantal topped the list, while Black Star landed at number three. It was same result as in 2021 – though, that year, northern Michigan claimed all three of the top spots, with Hotel Walloon in Walloon Lake finishing as runner-up. And in 2020, Black Star was the victor.
